Divergent Practice for Divergent Bodies:
An Intro to Fat Affirming Eating Disorder Care
About this course:
“Fatness is an epidemic.” “Fatness is unhealthy.” “Fatness is failure.” These are the societal narratives our clients face daily, dismantling their self-worth, body trust, and ability to live in appreciation for their body. Furthermore, those seeking care for disordered eating - particularly those in fat-bodies, must enter a health-system centered in weight-stigma, anti-fat bias, and the societal mistreatment of fat bodies. In a world working to eradicate fatness, we as clinicians must step in to oppose these biases and provide supportive client care. This presentation will focus on the root of weight-stigma and anti-fat bias, the role this plays in the current healthcare landscape and eating disorder treatments, and approaches for engaging in affirming eating disorder care with our clients.
